Consumption pattern of the inter-state migrant labourers: A study with special reference to Calicut District, Kerala

Author(s): P Milinth

Abstract: This study explores the consumption patterns of inter‑state migrant labourers in Calicut district, Kerala, based on primary data collected from 120 respondents. It examines the relationship between income, food and non‑food expenditure, remittances, and socio‑economic characteristics of the migrant workforce. Statistical tools such as chi‑square analysis were employed to test hypotheses regarding income‑expenditure relationships. Findings reveal that while food expenditure remains relatively stable across income groups, non‑food expenditure shows greater variability, reflecting diverse lifestyle needs. The study highlights survival‑oriented spending, cultural influences, and the significant role of income in shaping consumption behavior among migrant labourers.
