An analysis of female construction workers in Karnataka's Uttara Kannada District

Author(s): Geetha B Nayak

Abstract: Women constitute roughly 50% of the workforce in India. However, over 96% of women work in the unorganised sector. Ninety-three percent of the workforce in India is engaged in the formal sector. Additionally, these employees represent 50% of the nation's earnings and 62% of the GDP. Unemployment and poverty are the primary reasons for women's participation in the unorganised economy. Women from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds who lack literacy and have minimal education are compelled to seek employment in the informal sector due to the absence of other alternatives. It is noted that the count of women employed in the unorganised sector in domestic work, agriculture, street vending, construction, etc. is increasing each day. The placement agencies have yet to establish protocols for the safety of these women, who are exploited by their employers. These female workers find themselves in even more unstable circumstances due to insufficient laws and legal support. Female employees earn much less even though they work longer hours. It affects their personal and social lives. A study was conducted in Uttara Kannada to gain insight into the socioeconomic challenges women in the construction sector encounter.
