A comprehensive investigation of the non-performing assets that are belonging to Indian banking institutions

Author(s): Dr. Shashi Kapur Das

Abstract: Non-performing assets (NPAs) have long been a significant concern for Indian banking institutions, affecting their profitability, liquidity, and overall financial stability. NPAs are loans or advances that are in default or arrears, causing a major issue in the banking sector. This paper investigates the growing incidence of NPAs in Indian banks, the underlying causes, and the impacts on the banking industry. Factors such as economic slowdown, poor credit risk management, weak regulatory oversight, and corporate defaults contribute to the rising levels of NPAs. The paper also examines the role of government policies and regulatory frameworks like the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), as well as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, in managing NPAs. Additionally, the study discusses the measures undertaken by banks to recover defaulted loans, including loan restructuring, asset sales, and legal actions. The implications of high NPAs for economic growth and financial stability in India are highlighted, alongside strategies for reducing the NPA burden. The investigation also includes a comparative analysis of public sector and private sector banks in terms of NPA management. Addressing NPAs effectively is crucial for restoring confidence in the banking system and promoting sustainable economic development.
