A study on skill development of women through vocational training

Author(s): Tauffiqu Ahamad and Rajesh Kesari

Abstract: The empowerment of women through skill development has become a critical focus in global developmental strategies. Vocational training programs, which equip individuals with practical, marketable skills, are key instruments for enhancing women’s socio-economic independence and improving their participation in the labor force. This research paper aims to explore the multifaceted impact of vocational training on women’s skill development, focusing on its role in promoting gender equality, enhancing economic opportunities, and fostering social inclusion. By reviewing existing literature, examining case studies, and conducting interviews with key stakeholders, the study delves into the diverse types of vocational training available for women, such as those in traditional sectors (e.g., tailoring, agriculture) and emerging fields (e.g., information technology, green energy).
Furthermore, this research analyzes the challenges women face when accessing vocational training, including societal attitudes, financial constraints, and cultural norms that often prioritize family responsibilities over personal and professional development. The study highlights successful initiatives from both governmental and non-governmental organizations aimed at increasing women’s access to training programs and discusses how these programs contribute not only to the economic empowerment of women but also to their increased participation in decision-making processes at the household and community levels.
The findings suggest that vocational training is instrumental in improving women’s livelihoods, enabling them to secure stable employment, start their own businesses, and elevate their social standing. Additionally, women who acquire vocational skills are often able to break free from traditional gender roles, contributing to positive changes in gender norms. The paper concludes by recommending strategies to expand access to vocational training for women, such as improving infrastructure, providing financial support, offering flexible learning schedules, and fostering gender-sensitive training environments. Ultimately, this study underscores the crucial role of vocational training in creating a more equitable society by fostering skill development, economic empowerment, and social mobility for women worldwide.
