Microfinance interventions: Bridging the gap towards sustainable development goals (SDGs)

Author(s): Mohammad Shariq and Dr. Alok Singh

Abstract: The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by UN Members, aim to address global challenges such as peace, prosperity, environmental protection, and poverty eradication by 2030. Microfinance Institutions (MFINs) play a crucial role in providing banking and financial services to remote populations, directly contributing to SDG achievement. This paper focuses on five key SDGs-No Poverty, Quality Education, Gender Equality, Clean Water & Sanitation and Decent Work & Economic Growth-which are closely linked to microfinance. The growth of MFINs, as evidenced by the increasing Gross Loan Portfolio (GLP), underscores their significance in advancing these goals. This study examines how microfinance practices in India can help achieve these SDGs.
