Author(s): Md. Shahnawaz Haidar, Mohammed Abdul Azeem and Badiuddin Ahmed

Abstract: This paper explores the potential of inland waterways as a cost-effective alternative for supply chain management, particularly in economies burdened by high logistics costs. Businesses can enhance competitiveness, improve operational efficiency, and meet customer demands by reducing transportation, warehousing, and inventory expenses. Inland waterways offer a promising solution by lowering fuel consumption and maintenance costs compared to road and rail transport, particularly for Bulky goods. This mode of transportation also alleviates congestion on land networks, contributing to reduced transit times and lower carbon emissions. The paper highlights the environmental benefits, including fewer emissions and reduced road congestion, while emphasizing the importance of infrastructure investments, such as port facilities and technological innovations like digital navigation and autonomous vessels. However, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, regulatory barriers, and climate-related issues must be addressed. The study calls for further research on the integration of inland waterways in multi-modal logistics, the quantification of environmental impacts, and the role of technological advancements in improving efficiency and safety. Overcoming these challenges will unlock the full potential of inland waterways, positioning them as a key element in sustainable and cost-effective global supply chains.
