Fundamental analysis of selected public sector banks in India: A comparative study

Abstract: India, the world’s fifth largest economy of the world in terms of nominal GP and third largest economy in terms of Purchasing Power Parity (PPP). Our mixed middle – income social market economy includes contributions from major sectors of Service (over 50%), Industry and Agriculture. In the tertiary sector, the banking sector shows its own good percentage share for our nation’s economic growth. Based on Public Sector banks market capitalization, State Bank of India and Canara Bank has shown a leading position among public sector banks. Both banks have been confronted with the situation of merger and successfully completed. Fundamental analysis of banks means a quantitative analysis of banks financial statements to know the overall financial health and performance of banks. The study is based on two objectives mainly for checking the financial health and overall performance of selected public sector banks in India: State Bank of India and Canara Bank. For this purpose, the secondary data from the published financial statements available in the official website of State Bank of India and Canara Bank for a period of five years have used here. The research design is descriptive and analytical in nature. For getting results for the two objectives, tools like Key financial performance ratios, Comparative Balance Sheet, Comparative Profit and Loss Account and Altman Z-score statistics are used. The study resulted as both the banks should try to increase ROCE, ROA, ROE and net profit and try to keep Z score statistic value more than 1.8.and it also shows a good sign of more growth in future.
