Value chain analysis and risk assessment in the supply chain of water chestnut and barnyard millet flour
Author(s): Samuel Haile
Abstract: Background: The growing demand for functional food ingredients has spotlighted water chestnut flour (WCF) and barnyard millet flour (BMF) for their nutritional value, gluten-free properties, and health benefits. However, challenges in the value chain and risk management limit their scalability and efficient integration into commercial food systems. Objective: This study aims to conduct a value chain analysis and risk assessment for the supply chains of water chestnut and barnyard millet flour. It identifies critical control points, evaluates risks, and proposes mitigation strategies to ensure efficiency, sustainability, and economic viability. Methods: A combination of primary data collection (Interviews with farmers, processors, and distributors) and secondary data analysis (Literature review, case studies, and statistical reports) was employed. SWOT analysis, risk matrices, and value chain mapping were used to assess the key players and challenges across each stage of the supply chain.Findings: The study reveals that post-harvest losses, limited infrastructure, fragmented logistics, and price volatility are the major challenges in the supply chain. Value chain mapping highlights weak backward linkages with farmers and inadequate post-harvest handling systems as critical risk points. Effective solutions, including digital traceability systems, farmer education programs, and centralized processing facilities, can address these risks. Conclusion: An optimized value chain with robust risk management strategies is essential for enhancing the efficiency and resilience of water chestnut and barnyard millet flour supply chains. Addressing identified vulnerabilities will enable scalable production and sustainable integration into functional food markets.
