Author(s): Madhu Bala
Abstract: Sustainable development is the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the future generation to meet their own needs. Sustainable development depends on an equitable distribution of resources for today and for the future. Sustainable development cannot be achieved without gender equality. In September 2015, the United Nations General Assembly adopted 17 sustainable development goals to make the world a more sustainable and equitable society for all and aimed to achieve them by 2030. Gender equality (SDG5) is one of the important sustainable development goals. Women have a critical role to play in all of the SDGs. Gender equality is a fundamental human right and is prerequisite for sustainable development. Sustainable development goal 5 aims to achieve gender equality by ending all forms of discrimination, violence and harmful practices, including trafficking and sexual exploitation against women and girls. The present research paper aims to study the concept of sustainable development and to assess the India’s progress towards sustainable development. Additionally, to study the integral role of gender equality in achieving India’s sustainable development goal 5(SDG5).
