A critical review of plastic waste management in India

Abstract: One of the fastest growing component of solid waste is plastic waste (PW) in every household, every organisation and around the world. Although the level of plastic consumption in India is considerably low in comparison to other developed nations but still drastic import figures and domestic production of plastic goods creates high pressure on the dispose-off techniques of plastic goods and a long term sustainable strategic solution is the need of the hour. Although Indian experts have extensively explored technology-related challenges in academic articles, and it has been found that there is a significant knowledge and awareness gap in considering the problem's complexities and potential remedies. This review based article examines the contemporary situation of production by using plastic as raw material, it’s consumption, and generated plastic garbage in India, and the lacking in handling PW. This review article focuses on facts and information related to Indian PW management, highlighting crucial concerns related to creation of reverse supply chain, effective dispose-off management and return to source requirements in India. This comprehensive analysis will assist policymakers in identifying implementable solutions for plastic garbage management techniques and recycling in India, as well as research prospects for future researchers, with an emphasis on the circular economy and sustainable development goals.
