Lijjat Papad: A story of rural women and women leadership

Abstract: Women entrepreneurship in India has emerged as a significant force in the socio-economic development of the country. Despite facing numerous challenges, women entrepreneurs have demonstrated resilience, innovation, and leadership in various sectors. This paper explores the landscape of women entrepreneurship in India, with a special focus on the iconic success story of Lijjat Papad. Established in 1959, Lijjat Papad is a shining example of how a women-led cooperative can achieve remarkable success while empowering its members. This paper examines the factors contributing to the success of Lijjat Papad, the challenges faced by women entrepreneurs in India, and the lessons that can be drawn from the Lijjat model for fostering women entrepreneurship in the country.
