Initiatives of corporate social responsibility (CSR) of south eastern coal limited (SECL) towards community development and public welfare in Chhattisgarh

Abstract: The primary beneficiaries of C.S.R. are the landowners, Project Affected Persons (P.A.P.s), and those living within a 25-kilometer radius of the company’s establishment. The Present study focuses on analysing the Corporate Social Responsibility performed by the South Eastern Coalfields Limited (S.E.C.L.), a Mini Ratna company and a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (C.I.L.) towards community development and public welfare in Chhattisgarh on the basis of the perception of its beneficiaries. A pre-tested self structured questionnaire was used to collect the response of beneficiaries of CSR initiatives taken by SECL. The reports of SECL revealed that over the span of last 5 years every year SECL is contributing 2% of its average profit before tax towards the CSR initiatives. The results show that the response of beneficiaries significantly (p≤0.05) vary towards the CSR initiatives taken by SECL. The results reveal that the SECL have taken different initiatives for the community development. The different community benefited initiatives taken by SECl include; infrastructure development and facilities, healthcare facilities, drinking water facilities, education facilities, environment protection, employment and skill development, rural electrification, and sports facilities. it is said that infrastructure developed by SECL has a significant impact on ease and comfortability of people’s life and any changes made in these amenities induces a variability of around 51.6 percent within ease and comfortability of people’s life. CSR practices have a strong correlation with SECL's involvement in community progression, and any modification in CSR activities could lead to a variation of 83.18 percent in developmental activities. The results of the present study confirmed that SECL is involved in the community development and public welfare in Chhattisgarh. Further research investigations are required to determine the role of SECL CSR initiatives in the socio-economic development of people of Chhattisgarh. The results of the resent study will be used by the policy makers, government, SECL Company, academicians and researchers for their own domains of CSR.
