An analytical study of the e-commerce landscape in the Indian online market

Author(s): Deepika

Abstract: This study analyzes the e-commerce landscape in India, identifying key growth drivers, challenges, and consumer behavior trends that shape the sector. Based on both primary survey responses and secondary data analysis, the findings highlight crucial factors such as business strategy (11.97%), internet penetration (6.91%), smartphone adoption (6.12%), digital payment advancements (5.99%), and government initiatives (5.05%) as key growth drivers. Despite rapid growth, e-commerce businesses face significant challenges, including logistical inefficiencies (68%), regulatory constraints (61%), cybersecurity threats (55%), consumer trust issues (49%), and high competition (47%). Government policies, particularly FDI regulations (70% positive impact), GST taxation (62% positive impact), and consumer protection laws (65% positive impact), influence e-commerce growth, though some policies also have negative effects (e.g., 38% view GST as restrictive, 42% feel data protection laws have a negative impact). Consumer behavior trends reveal that 76% of respondents are heavily influenced by discounts, 68% are influenced by social media, 64% prefer cash on delivery (COD), and 40% show a preference for local brands. This study offers insightful information for e-commerce companies and legislators to solve problems and seize possibilities, so promoting steady expansion in the Indian online market.
