Author(s): M Sharmila and Kiran G

Abstract: Women make up about half of the workforce in India. Nevertheless, more than 96% of women are employed in the unorganised sector. 93% of India's labour is employed in the formal sector. Furthermore, these workers account for 50% of the country's income and 62% of the GDP. Unemployment and poverty are the main causes of women's entry into the unorganised economy. Women from lower socioeconomic origins who are illiterate and have low levels of education are obliged to work in the unorganised sector since there are no other options. It is observed that the number of women working in the unorganised sector in household work, agriculture, street vending, construction, etc. is growing daily. The placement agencies have not yet developed procedures for these women's safety, these women are exploited by their employers. These women workers are in even more precarious situations as a result of inadequate legislation and legal assistance. The pay for female workers is significantly lower despite their longer hours worked. It has an impact on their social and personal lives. To learn more about the socioeconomic issues that women in the construction industry face, a study was carried out in Bangalore's south.
