Cryptocurrency and Indian Economy: An analysis

Author(s): Jyotirmoy Koley

Abstract: The integration of cryptocurrency into India's economy has generated considerable debate and scholarly inquiry as the nation contends with the potential advantages and risks associated with this emerging technology. This study seeks to evaluate the status of cryptocurrency in India and its impact on the Indian economy through a comprehensive analysis of existing literature and primary data collected from a sample of 108 consumers and business owners in the State of West Bengal. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative data to assess the adoption levels and economic implications of cryptocurrency in India. This study reveals that cryptocurrency adoption is gaining momentum, particularly among young, affluent, and educated males, with potential benefits such as expedited international transactions and novel investment opportunities. However, challenges and risks, including regulatory uncertainty, the potential for illicit activities, and threats to financial stability, persist. The survey data indicate higher adoption rates among upper-middle-class and affluent respondents, with most users in the early stages of adoption. Positive correlations exist between socioeconomic status, adoption levels, and perceived economic impact. The future of cryptocurrency in India appears promising, but it is contingent upon forthcoming regulations and addressing challenges related to education, technological adoption, and consumer protection. As India navigates this complex landscape, policymakers must balance innovation with financial stability to harness the potential benefits of cryptocurrency while mitigating the associated risks. The study concludes that a strategic and regulated approach is necessary to maximize the advantages of cryptocurrency in India's economy while ensuring financial stability and consumer protection.
