The evolution of India's mutual fund market structure: A theoretical perspective on competition and consolidation

Author(s): Bhanu Pratap Singh and Somesh Dhingra

Abstract: This paper examines the evolution of India's mutual fund market structure, focusing specifically on the interplay between competitive dynamics and the observable trend towards industry consolidation. As a critical component of India's rapidly expanding financial sector, the mutual fund industry has transitioned through distinct phases, marked by regulatory shifts, changing investor demographics, and evolving business strategies of Asset Management Companies (AMCs). Adopting a theoretical perspective, this research utilizes frameworks from industrial organization and theories of competition to analyze these structural changes.
We explore the theoretical underpinnings driving market concentration, including the pursuit of economies of scale and scope, the impact of brand value and distribution networks, the role of technological advancements, and the strategic imperatives behind mergers and acquisitions within the sector. The paper theorizes how the shift from a potentially more fragmented market towards one dominated by fewer, larger players influences the nature of competition. This includes potential effects on fee structures, product innovation, fund performance persistence, and ultimately, investor welfare.
Furthermore, the study considers the regulatory environment's role in shaping market structure, acting as both a catalyst and a constraint on competitive forces and consolidation trends. By applying established economic theories to the specific context of the Indian mutual fund market, this paper aims to provide a structured understanding of its past trajectory and potential future developments, offering insights relevant to policymakers, industry participants, and investors navigating this dynamic landscape. The research contributes by synthesizing theoretical models to explain the complex evolution of competition and consolidation in a major emerging financial market.
