Empowering youth employment in Haryana through digital shopping platforms
Author(s): Sunit Sharma
Abstract: The rise of the digital economy has significantly reshaped the employment landscape, particularly impacting youth employment patterns in India. This study delves into the transformative role played by digital markets, with a specific focus on online shopping platforms, in generating employment opportunities for the youth in Haryana. Through a comprehensive analysis of both primary and secondary data, the research examines how these platforms are not only opening up avenues for entrepreneurship and self-employment but are also fostering gig work and skill-based jobs such as digital marketing, logistics, content creation, and customer service.
The study pays special attention to how youth in both urban and rural regions of Haryana are adapting to and benefiting from digital platforms. While the findings underscore the positive impact of e-commerce in enabling flexible, accessible, and diverse job roles, they also reveal persistent challenges. These include a pronounced digital divide between urban and rural areas, limited digital infrastructure, and low levels of digital literacy, especially among rural youth. Such barriers hinder the full realization of the digital economy’s potential for inclusive growth.
The research concludes that while digital markets have emerged as crucial drivers of youth employment in Haryana, there is an urgent need for targeted policy interventions. These should focus on enhancing digital education, improving rural connectivity, and supporting small-scale digital entrepreneurship to ensure equitable and sustainable employment opportunities.
