Digital transformation in entrepreneurship

Author(s): Georgia L Thinakaran

Abstract: Entrepreneurs today are driven toward digital transformation not merely by ambition but by necessity. This urgency was starkly revealed during the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced businesses to rapidly adapt to disrupted supply chains, compressed delivery timelines, and swiftly shifting customer demands. In an era marked by constant technological evolution and market volatility, the capacity to respond with speed and precision has become a critical determinant of long-term entrepreneurial success. Digital transformation has fundamentally reshaped the entrepreneurial landscape. From ideation and market entry to scaling and sustainability, the integration of digital technologies—such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, e-commerce platforms, and social media—has enabled entrepreneurs to operate within a highly connected, data-driven ecosystem. These advancements have not only reduced traditional barriers to entry but also expanded global access, enhanced customer interaction, and revolutionized operational models. This paper explores the multifaceted role of digital tools in shaping contemporary entrepreneurial ecosystems. It examines the opportunities and barriers faced by diverse enterprises and underscore the importance of digital literacy, digitization, digitalization, and strategic agility as essential competencies for sustaining a competitive edge in the digital economy.
