Green innovation in product design: A systematic review

Abstract:
This review analyses green product design innovations in India, focusing on identifying mounting environmental pressures while aligning with the country’s sustainable development goals. By synthesising existing studies, the research highlights key innovations, including material substitutions, energy efficiency improvements, waste reduction strategies, and the integration of circular economy principles. These innovations were identified in the context of India’s unique socio-economic landscape, where sustainability should be aligned with economic growth and social equity. Case studies across divorce sectors, including agriculture, textiles, and manufacturing, demonstrate the practical application and the potential of these innovations. For instance, the use of organic material in agriculture and the revival of traditional practices in textiles address the potential of indigenous knowledge in driving sustainable design. The review emphasises the significance of leveraging India’s traditional knowledge, and supporting local affordability and accessibility are explored as critical factors in the population.
Additionally, the study highlights the role of policy frameworks and consumer awareness in promoting green product design. The integration of circular economy principles, such as reuse and recycling, and an approach to minimise environmental impact, highlights the development challenges. Overall, the study underscores the importance of India’s environmental sustainability and economic growth. By promoting sustainable practices tailored to local demands, India can provide valuable lessons for other developing nations. This study provides comprehensive insights for policymakers, businesses, and researchers aiming to advance green innovation in India.
