Author(s): Jyotirmoy Koley

Abstract: The advancement of rural entrepreneurship is pivotal in enhancing the socio-economic conditions of rural regions, particularly in areas with distinct cultural and geographical attributes, such as Darjeeling, West Bengal, India. This study seeks to identify the challenges and opportunities associated with rural entrepreneurship development in Darjeeling, considering the region's unique context. This study utilized a mixed-methods approach, integrating descriptive and analytical research through both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Primary data were gathered using structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews from a sample of 80 rural entrepreneurs across various sectors, while secondary data were sourced from pertinent literature and online resources. The findings indicate that rural entrepreneurs in Darjeeling encounter significant challenges, including infrastructural and geographic barriers, financial constraints, marketing difficulties, socio-personal issues, and skill deficiencies. Nonetheless, the region offers considerable opportunities for entrepreneurship in agro-based industries, tourism and hospitality, handicrafts and cottage industries, the tea industry, service sectors, and renewable energy. Government support through various schemes provides financial aid, skill development, and capacity building, although awareness and utilization differ among entrepreneurs. Statistical analysis confirmed significant positive correlations between the sources of finance, technical training, and overall entrepreneurship development. This study advocates a multi-stakeholder approach involving policymakers, financial institutions, entrepreneurs, associations, and educational institutions to cultivate an enabling environment for rural entrepreneurship. By addressing these challenges and capitalizing on the opportunities, Darjeeling can achieve sustainable rural entrepreneurship development, contributing to poverty alleviation, employment generation, and regional growth.
