Mobile Payment systems in India and their impact on consumer purchasing behavior
Author(s): Shabana Anjum
Abstract:
This study examines how mobile payment systems (such as UPI, mobile wallets, and app-based payments) in India influence consumer purchasing behavior. With rapid digitalization, government initiatives, and financial inclusion efforts, more consumers are shifting from cash to digital/mobile modes. Through primary survey data and secondary sources, this paper investigates factors such as perceived ease of use, trust, security, social influence, and perceived usefulness, and how they affect purchase frequency, impulse buying, choice of retailers, and spending volume. The findings reveal that mobile payment adoption significantly increases convenience and frequency of transactions; however, concerns over security, digital literacy, and trust still moderate the impact. Suggestions are made for policy, fintech providers, and merchants to enhance adoption and ensure responsible purchasing behavior.
