Marketable yield of field pea (Pisum sativum L.) under different weed management practices in irrigated agriculture
Author(s): Ahmed Youssef
Abstract: Field Pea (Pisum sativum L.) is an important leguminous crop known for its nutritional value and role in crop rotation. However, weed infestation remains a significant challenge in field pea cultivation, affecting crop marketable yield and quality. Effective weed management is crucial for optimizing the marketable marketable yield of field peas, particularly under irrigated conditions. This research investigates the impact of various weed management practices on the marketable marketable yield of field peas in irrigated agriculture. The experimental treatments included chemical, mechanical, and integrated weed management techniques. The objective was to determine the most effective weed control method for improving marketable yield, reducing competition for nutrients, water, and light, and ensuring sustainable crop production. The results of the research highlight the effectiveness of integrated weed management (IWM) practices, which combined chemical herbicides with mechanical weeding, in enhancing field pea marketable yield. This was followed closely by chemical weed control treatments, which demonstrated good efficacy in weed suppression but were less environmentally sustainable. Mechanical weed control alone, while reducing weed density, showed suboptimal results due to its labor-intensive nature. The marketable marketable yield of field peas was significantly higher in the IWM and chemical treatments compared to mechanical weeding and untreated controls. The findings suggest that integrating multiple weed control strategies offers the best results in maximizing field pea production under irrigated conditions. This research provides valuable insights for farmers seeking to improve marketable yield while maintaining environmental sustainability in their agricultural practices.
