Impact of digital transformation on small and medium enterprises (SMES)

Author(s): Monika M Jogdand

Abstract: Digital transformation is increasingly becoming a strategic imperative for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to remain competitive, innovative, and resilient in a rapidly evolving business environment. This paper explores the impact of digital transformation on SMEs from operational, financial, and strategic perspectives. It examines how technologies such as cloud computing, e-commerce, artificial intelligence, and automation are influencing productivity, market access, customer experience, and decision-making. Through a descriptive and analytical review of secondary data, industry reports, and scholarly research, the paper highlights both opportunities and challenges associated with digital adoption. Findings suggest that while digital transformation enhances efficiency and scalability, it also exposes SMEs to risks related to cybersecurity, cost, and skill gaps. The paper concludes with recommendations to bridge the digital divide and promote inclusive digital growth for SMEs.
